Introduction to Elise

The University of New South Wales is committed to providing an environment that fosters in our students ‘the skills involved in scholarly enquiry, including the skills to locate, evaluate and use relevant information’.

(adapted from the UNSW statement on Graduate Attributes, as resolved by the Academic Board of 7 October 2003, AB03/67)

ELISE has been designed to assist students in developing these essential graduate skills.

What is ELISE?

ELISE (Enabling Library and Information Skills for Everyone) is an online tutorial. The aim of ELISE is to equip you with the library and information literacy skills you will need to get started in your postgraduate program.

Why is ELISE important?

The purpose of university research is to increase the sum of knowledge or, in a professional program, to reach informed decisions and judgments based on a scholarly process of accessing, analysing and evaluating information. Part of this scholarly process is information literacy and your development of this essential academic skill begins here.

How is ELISE structured?

ELISE consists of five Modules. Modules 1-4 will step you through the process of research, using a typical assignment from a postgraduate business degree. They will familiarise you with a range of research sources and tools available through the UNSW Library. Module 5 will address the ethical principles of academic work.

  • Module 1 Recognising the need for information
  • Module 2 Finding information
  • Module 3 Managing information
  • Module 4 Critically evaluating information.
  • Module 5 Using information ethically
